How To Get Involved In The Million Mile Clean - Surfers Against Sewage

3 Minuten Lesezeit

Described as the most ambitious UK beach clean campaign ever, the Million Mile Clean was launched last year by Surfers Against Sewage to incredible success.

The simple but effective idea behind the campaign is to mobilise 100,000 volunteers every year to clean 10 miles of green and blue space - making the UK one million miles cleaner.

To help this year’s campaign, the Million Mile May challenge was launched on Strava, aiming to be the biggest month of beach/street/river/mountain clean ever! In the app people are able to log their cleans and join the Surfers Against Surfers Strava Club, which now has over 8000 members across the UK and internationally since it launched in May.

At dryrobe® we’re proud to sponsor the Million Mile Clean this year, through our Warmth Project. To support this campaign we joined Surfers Against Sewage on their beach cleans at Perranporth and Watergate Bay in Cornwall.

At Watergate Bay, there was an impressive turnout with people joining in who’d come especially for the clean and others who had turned up to enjoy the sunshine and got involved!

We gave out prizes to some of the dedicated beach cleaners, including those who spent the most time cleaning the beach and the person who’d travelled the furthest.

Since the start of the year, there have been 4,568 cleans registered, this is a new Surfers Against Sewage record. Over 100,496 volunteers have been mobilised and are taking part in clean actions across the UK, which has beaten the target for the year of 100,000 volunteers already, and it’s only June!

Because of this incredible number of volunteers, collectively Surfers Against Sewage have been able to collect over 281,388.8kg of plastic and packing pollution across 714,560 miles of blue and green spaces.

Despite these record-breaking numbers, Surfers Against Sewage still need your help to keep our coastlines and green spaces clean. Jack Middleton, SAS Community & Events Manager explains how you can join in:

“To get involved with Million Mile Clean, and all our beach cleans, is the easiest thing ever. We’ve created our own website just to help people sign up. Head to beachcleans.org.uk, all the information is there, we provide all the equipment for free and there’s free guidance. Cleans are taking place right across the UK, so find a clean near you, or organise a clean and the team at Surfer’s Against Sewage will be here to support you the whole way.”
