Lucy Campbell's Top 5 Tips For Cold Water Surf Motivation

Let's face it, surfing in the UK generally means surfing in colder water. It's worth it though, with those colder seasons generally producing more consistent swell, quieter lineups and bigger waves - meaning some of the best sessions of the year for a lot of people. However, colder water and air temperatures can leave some of us a little lacking in the motivation to pull on that thicker wetsuit and get out there. We caught up with dryrobe ambassador and current English Women's Champ Lucy Campbell for a few waves recently and asked for her top tips for staying motivated during the colder months.

Whether it's peeling yourself away from your snuggly duvet for that frosty surf before work or finding the courage to pull on your (probably cold, wet) wetsuit to get in for a sloppy onshore day, here are a few tips on how to keep those motivation levels high!

- Get the tunes on while you're on the way to the beach or while you pull your wetty on. The cheesier the better - if it makes you want to sing along, PERFECT. (I’m not judging)

- Dress up warm. Warm clothes first, dryrobe to get changed in and then get those boots and gloves on - don’t start cold or the grey ocean just won't be appealing at all.

- Set yourself a little goal. Even on the rubbish days if you set yourself a challenge of, say catching 10 waves you’ll be way more determined to get in and will always come out happy after achieving it!

- Go surfing with a friend. It's always more fun to get in the water with someone else! You can motivate and push each other to get in there. (Plus then there's no backing out! ;) )

- Treat yourself afterwards! You'll have earned it after that chilly surf. My personal favourite is getting straight in my dryrobe to warm up, then have a warm, gooey chocolate brownie waiting for me! (Editor's note - Lucy's brownies are the best out there, we'd get in freezing cold surf to get some any day!)
