The history of Swimrun goes back to 2002, beginning life as the result of a drunken bet between friends in Sweden. After a late-night of drinking, two pairs of friends challenged each other to a race across the Stockholm Archipelago (an impressive 75km over land and water) with the only rule being that they had to pass three different restaurants on the islands between the start and the finishing line. The losers had to pay for the dinner, drinks and hotel for the other team at the end of the challenge. The race ended up taking the teams 24 hours to complete and they enjoyed the experience so much that they did again the next year!
In 2006 Michael Lemmel and Mats Skott were asked if they could make a commercial race out the challenge. They named the race ÖTILLÖ ('island to island' in Swedish) and created one of the toughest endurance races in the world.
Sticking to its roots, ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Series is a team sport, with teams of two racing together along a pre-marked course, both running and swimming within 10 metres of each other. This truly captures the spirit of Swimrun, which is based on teamwork, motivation, fun and passion.
The ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Series takes in some of the most stunning locations in the world including: Catalina Island in California, the Engadin valley in the Swiss Alps, Cannes on the French Riviera and the iconic Isles of Scilly set off the Cornish coast where dryrobe® was first conceived. The Swimrun World Championships take place each year where it all began, racing 75km across the Stockholm Archipelago in Sweden.
ÖTILLÖ are passionate about protecting nature at all the locations they race at, working closely with local environmental organisations. During each race weekend ÖTILLÖ organise a #cleantheocean ‘garbage hunt’ with all who want to participate
We can’t wait for the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Series to kick off in Utö, Sweden on the 21st May!
