Unpredictable British summer weather didn’t dampen the Wave Project’s Summer Sessions in Scarborough North Yorkshire UK.
The only free surfing event of its kind in the UK, The Wave Project’s Summer Surf Sessions saw 40 children and 35 Volunteers take to the sea in North Yorkshire for a day of fun in the sea. Volunteers came from near and very far, including North Yorkshire, North East, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. We were proud to be the dline sponsors of this inspiring event, supporting it through the dryrobe® Warmth Project.
The more severe and temperamental weather in the south of England meant that the joint Summer Sessions host at Watergate Bay, Newquay, was unfortunately cancelled due to strong rip currents and cross-shore winds. However, the success and good vibes at Scarbrough still meant that the first-ever Summer Sessions kicked off with an exciting start.
The Wave Project is an incredible charity dedicated to improving the mental health and well-being of young people through the power of surf therapy. The organisation has received a growing demand for surfing from people with a wide range of physical disabilities over the last five years, encouraging its mission to make surfing accessible to everyone.
Teamed with the necessary skills, training, and specialist equipment to deliver safe and enjoyable surf sessions, earlier this year, they introduced their first Adaptive Surfing Hub in Croyde, North Devon and now have two more hubs in the UK at Scarborough and Watergate Bay.
The Summer Sessions are specially designed for the needs of young people and adults with disabilities and mental health needs to help develop their confidence in the water.
The Wave Project's crew of epic surf coaches and volunteer surf mentors make the experience an easy and fun experience to help build water confidence. A massive thank you to the Wave Project’s surf coaches and volunteer surf mentors who made the 2023 Summer Sessions possible.
We’re incredibly proud to be a Warmth Project partner with Wave Project in their amazing movements to get more and more people into the water! dryrobe® is supporting 5 x children in their 6-week Summer Sessions surf therapy course in Watergate Bay.
In total, our support to The Wave Project has helped 45 children get into surf therapy sessions in the summer of 2023. We are so excited to see how the Summer Sessions help throughout the year!
