When we developed our thermal boots, we wanted to make them as friendly on the planet as possible.
Similar to our other weatherproof products, the upper of the boots is made with water-resistant, 100% recycled nylon, and the super-warm inner lining is 100% recycled polyester. For the sole though, we’ve done something a little bit different, and made it using Bloom Rise EVA foam, which includes 20% algae!
Why Algae?
Algae is the fastest-growing plant on Earth, and it is a key component of aquatic ecosystems. However, the rise in global temperatures, excess nutrient runoff, and human activities have contributed to an uncontrollable rise in algae growth in some ecosystems —harming plant, animal, and even human life.
Deciding to turn a negative into a positive, Bloom has utilised excess algae biomass harvested from ecosystems needing algae management. Algae biomass is the perfect resource for creating useful materials, as it does not require fossil fuels or arable land to grow.
By implementing algae biomass into products, Bloom has helped create an efficient supply chain for algae as a sustainable resource, all the while helping create and maintain healthy ecosystems.
How does this work?
Reversing the effects of water pollution, algae removes ammonia, phosphate, nitrate and other pollutants from the sea, helping to maintain healthy ecosystems. This algae can then be turned into useable materials to create numerous products, including boots!
Algae also takes in CO2 and stores it. Using Bloom Rise means this CO2 is stored into useful products, swapping out harmful materials used in traditional footwear manufacture.
What impact does this make?
The environmental impact of every product made using Bloom is third-party verified. For each pair of dryrobe® Eco Thermal Boots produced, 65 litres of water is cleaned, and 49.4g of CO2 is removed from the atmosphere.
