Becoming a national champion on home turf previously seemed like an unimaginable feat for German surfers.
However, 2024 has proven to be a historic year for the sport in Germany - what once seemed like a distant dream became a full-blown reality.
In a historic milestone for German surfing, the 2024 German National Surfing Championship was held on German waves at Europe's largest surf park, O2 SURFTOWN MUC in Munich.
Recently launched this August, Germany’s first-ever wave pool generates world-class waves through its unique wave technology. Attracting any surfer who wants to experience its ideal conditions, it's capable of producing waves up to 2.2 metres high and welcomes surfers of all abilities, from those who are looking to sharpen their skills to those who have never experienced riding waves before.
During the three-day competition, over 10,000 eager visitors came to the newly established surfing hub to watch and support 123 of the country’s best SUP, longboard, shortboard, and adaptive athletes, who showcased their skills in a battle for national titles across 13 different classes.
We were proud to sponsor this iconic event, which meant Germany’s dedicated surf community could win national titles on their home soil.
The comp saw some incredible surfers hit the water, including Olympians Camilla Kemp, Tim Etler, and Leon Glatzer. Even with these big names in the midst of the competition, every competitor was inspiring to watch, making it a truly gripping three days of solid surfing
As Germany’s first-ever female surfer to qualify for the Olympics, it was a privilege to witness our dryrobe® Ambassador Camilla Kemp take the gold in the Women’s Open firsthand, fresh from a summer training and competing on Teahupo’o’s notoriously savage wave at the Paris Games.
Just after her epic win, an excited Camilla had this message:
“Hi dryrobe® Team, I just finished the German Champ, and I won the event! It was such a sick weekend, and I hope you guys tuned in, I hope there’s going to be more in the future and I’m happy for the first one!”
We were also stoked to see many familiar faces and friends of dryrobe® throughout the event. Some epic results were achieved, including adaptive surfer Ben Neumann who took home the gold in his class, Paulina Herpel, who won the women’s SUP, and Valentin Illichman, who claimed silver in the Men’s event.
Moritz Schreiber shredded his way to victory in the Men’s Senior category, and the Men’s Shortboard event was an intense watch with Olympic surfer Leon Glatzer taking the win in a fierce final competing against fellow German Olympian and dryrobe® friend Tim Elter, surfer Lenni Jensen, and dryrobe® friend Finn Springborn.
Congratulations to all competitors. It was amazing to see the German surf community come together to celebrate the sport and demonstrate pure camaraderie and support for one another in such a game-changing setting for the future of German surfing.
A big thank you to everyone who made the event possible, we can’t wait for the next one!
