The Ultimate Training Ground: How Dryrobe® Ambassadors Shred The Wave

4 minute read

Three miles inland and poised on the outskirts of a major city is not where you’d usually expect to find consistent world-class waves, but The Wave is a place that defies expectations.

Opened in 2019, it was the first wave public wavepool in the world to use Wavegarden’s groundbreaking Cove technology. This generates up to 1,000 waves per hour, ranging from beginner to advanced. The whole experience has been carefully designed to ensure each surfer has the space and time to enjoy their session.

The Wave isn't just a paradise for those new to surfing, it's also a world-class high-performance facility, where the UK’s top surf talent comes to sharpen their skills. The clever Wavegarden technology delivers a wide range of perfect waves on demand, making it the ideal training ground for elite athletes - many of whom are ambassadors for both Dryrobe® and The Wave. It is also the perfect facility in terms of true accessibility - making it the ideal training hub for the Team England Adaptive para surfers.

Lukas Skinner: The Next-Gen Phenomenon

As a World Champion Grom and one of the most exciting young surfers on the planet, Lukas Skinner has been using The Wave as a training hub since it first opened. For Lukas, the consistent sets provide an invaluable competitive edge. Lukas's connection to the venue runs deep. Alongside his dad, longboard legend and fellow Dryrobe® ambassador, Ben Skinner, he has been tearing up the waves in Bristol since its opening day.

For Lukas, it is a great place for him to master Heat Strategy. Instead of waiting out back in an unpredictable ocean, Lukas uses the surfing lake to lock down consistent competition routines, perfect his air game, and test new board shapes back-to-back.

Siyanda Hewitt: Breaking Barriers

Another rising star making massive waves in the UK scene is Siyanda Hewitt. As a trailblazer in British surfing and a pro surfer representing South Africa, Siyanda uses the continuous reps at The Wave to seamlessly elevate his technical surfing to an elite level. For athletes like Siyanda, having a guaranteed canvas means they can hyper-focus on specific manoeuvres, like sharpening a rail turn or perfecting a carve, over and over again until it’s hardwired into muscle memory.

Championing Inclusivity: The Adaptive Crew

The Wave is completely accessible to people of all abilities - something that has been part of its DNA since the very early days. It has hosted many of the English Adaptive Surfing Open competitions and regularly welcomes para surfers to train or to try surfing for the first time. Dryrobe® is also a huge supporter of the UK’s adaptive surfing community via its sponsorship of both the competitions and Team England Adaptive. You’ll regularly see inspiring athletes pushing boundaries in the water, then immediately wrapping up in Dryrobe® gear such as the Dryrobe® Adapt, to protect their core temperature between heats.

The Next Generation: Team England Juniors

Dryrobe® supports Team England Juniors – helping the next generation of pros develop their skills and gain valuable competition experience. The Wave regularly hosts the squad for training days, where they surf multiple sessions in the lake on different sessions and benefit from instant video analysis and feedback from their coaches - before going again!

All of these surfers have one thing in common: they use Dryrobe® to stay warm and get changed before and after their surfs at The Wave.
